- I think a certain fear of judgement is sometimes healthy - by that I mean looking at ourselves as how we think others may look at us, and being aware of what the results may be - both good and bad. The change in perspective can be sobering. Too much, however... and we become cowards.

- Is not wanting to be misunderstood the same as not wanting to be judged incorrectly? I often don't trust other people's judgement of me (unless they are close friends) either... I think they perceive things through their own biases and perspectives, and don't necessarily come to the right conclusion.

- Hmmmm.... for me, misjudging is a sort of "first impression" kind of thing... or something one does without even without knowing another person first hand (can be done based just on hearsays). misinterpreting, well, can come from only when you have something of a relationship with a person.

- My guess: High Fructose Corn Syrup. Some biology major friends of mine just told me about a study that concludes that not all sweeteners are created equal, and that corn syrup encourages obesity on a much greater scale than an equal amount of sugar. And what have we been using a lot more of in the last few decades? Corn syrup. I'm well aware that one study proves very little, but it seems a reasonable working theory.

- Meri is talking about a Princeton study that came out earlier this year, which was very flawed:
"they failed to put into perspective the excessive amount consumed by the rats in their experimental design. Translating the study’s reported rat intakes to human proportions, the calories gained from high fructose corn syrup would be equivalent to about 3000 kcal/day all from that single source. In comparison, adult humans consume about 2,000 calories per day from all dietary sources. Such intake levels for the study animals would be the equivalent of humans drinking a total of 20 cans of 12 ounce sodas per day - a highly unrealistic amount. Moreover, the researchers concluded that the rats gained more weight from high fructose corn syrup than they would have from sugar, yet the researchers had no proper basis for drawing this conclusion since they failed to provide sucrose controls for part of the study’s short-term experiments and no sucrose controls whatsoever"
What do you think? - ReplySend message

- With the advent of medicine and other technologies that allow us to change and control our environment, it's safe to say that we've already stopped evolving in any meaningful way. Is part of your concern the idea that cloning would just create a population with very little diversity?
- ReplySend message

- I enjoy diversity in particular diversity that has an impact on our survival and we will not stop evolving while we still reproduce in a natural way I know its hard for us to see in our lifetimes but if you need examples look back to history.

- I don't think so. I think it could be used for much better purposes than just reproduction. On the idea of reproduction, no matter how many horrible diseases and complications there are associated with it, we still do it at an exponentially increasing rate and will soon overpopulate the planet. I think it could be used for better reasons. Maybe to answer questions that are debated a lot. Like sexuality. If you cloned a homosexual person and raised them in a different type of environment, would they still end up being gay? The nature or nurture debate, you know?

- Are you saying it is better to clone someone to use them as part of a scientific study than to clone someone so that, say, an infertile couple can have a biological "child"?
I should clarify - when I say cloning is a safe and effective means or reproduction, one of the things cloning could do is help infertile couples, gay and lesbian men and women, widows and widowers have biological children. - ReplySend message

- Well, my basic idea behind my reasoning is that there are too many people in the world already. We are consuming more resources than we will ever be able to replace and are doomed to eventually either starve ourselves into extinction or live the rest of our existence out fighting over the last of the resources. And my opinion on the infertile couples having children is this: if you need a child to justify your existence or relationship, you're probably with a person who isn't fulfilling you anyway.
- ReplySend message
- Kapongham
- Flag this comment
- People have a right to reproductive and procreative freedom - you and I don't have the right to tell them not to have children. Do we make fertile couples justify their having children? No, because we respect that right. What's so fundamentally different about people who happen to be infertile that they have to justify that decision to you?
- ReplySend message
- Rodney.Mi
- Flag this comment
- Technically, I don't suppose we exactly have the right to tell people whether or not they can or should have reproductive or procreative freedom. But more to my point is this: I say if they are smart enough to clone themselves without any help from people who have already worked out how to do it, then I believe that that persons "offspring" would be a good addition to the human race. But on a side note, we actually do determine who is "fit" and "unfit" parents whether it be in the form of child protective services or the acceptance or rejection of a couple who wants to, for instance, adopt a child.

I don't know how to use any other term than calling it Othering, though it sounds too academic for my taste. Basically, it places the Western/colonizing country as the norm and center of all things, and everyone else is marginalized.

- well let's see...maybe mind control for starters? actually, there are all kinds that even our own government has and does still employ..and what about messing with our stratosphere and changing our weather at will? and not forgetting 'Star Wars' defense in space..there will always be someone to use something for power and control over everyone and everything on this planet

- Just being the devil's advocate here, but changing our weather at will could solve the most critical challenge humanity has faced as a species: global warming. And the reason that SDI was so unpopular was because it was seen as an impossibility in the first place - just pie in the sky. If anything, because it focussed on self-defense instead of an offensive strategy, it could be argued that it was intended to prevent evil from being done.

- But *who* are these 'man haters,' is my point. I myself know none, and none of my lesbian friends hate men. In fact, most of the man hating I see is perpetuated by married, middle of the road women who would know a right if it bit them on the tuckus.
So, again, how is it that a practically invisible minority is causing strife for the rest of us?
It's a question worth asking, however my theory is that the stereotypes have been mostly started and perpetuated by those afraid of the power that women do or could have, NOT by any certain 'type' of feminist that exists. Those most threatened by it, have the most to lose, attack what they fear.
John McCain would not invite me to dinner, however I am in fact a feminine, smiling, kind and educated woman who loves my family and stays home with my children. Funny world, this. - ReplySend message

- Right. Even in college, when people might first learn about feminist theories and go crazy obsessed with it, I didn't meet any manhaters. The places where men seem to be insulted and derided the most are decidedly *un*feminist places - stereotypical sitcoms with the slob husband, Cosmo articles that make it seem like men are sex-starved animals, ads that portray men as dumb and too lazy to do housework.

- College/university can sure get the crazy obsession going. A 40-year old academic friend of mine who is in social work (but also has done her share of feminist theory) is on it to the point that admittedly it's hard for me to avoid tuning out.
In order to convince, one does have to 'play the part,' to a degree. I don't want the chick with 50 pins on her jacket all with feminist slogans and waving the banner to be on my team, thank you very much. I need confident, well spoken and calm individuals to help in my fight. :) - ReplySend message

- To be honest, men don't like being called villains by these "man haters". No, there aren't a lot of them out there, but most of us are just trying to live our lives. Getting yelled at by women on how we don't consider them equal, when most of us actually do, can be very, very, tiresome.

- But WHO are the 'villains'? When is the last time any man you know was called one, and by whom? Honestly, please tell us. Because I know a *lot* of women, and none of them do that. So I seek the ones who do to try to suss out why and where this happens, and in what context.
And why would a woman yell that you weren't regarding her as equal if you were? When was it and in what conditions did the yelling take place? There must have been extenuating circumstances (and I'm certainly not implying that the onus was solely on you to figure it out). - ReplySend message

I agree we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before in the first and second waves, however I would argue that all of those who take part are feminists. I went back to school late in life and I assure you, the majority of girls who were 10 years my junior at the time (around the 20-year-old mark) were NOT feminists.
I think believing in our right to have the things you mentioned above makes us feminists. - ReplySend message

- Well, of *course* they should, but many don't. I think everyone - men and women - have to right to label themselves feminist because of their beliefs or actions or both. However if a 19-year-old woman attends university because mommy and daddy pay for it, and lease her the car, and rent her the apartment, and she lines up in February outside the meat market bars with her tank-topped friends who all look exactly the same as she does, and she gives no thought nor ever speaks about her rights...is she a feminist then, merely for being a female who enjoys the fruits of others' labors? I don't think so.

- You'll notice that I said that many don't realize it or put just a 'little' of themselves in. But yes, there are air-heads out there that (frankly) don't deserve to even be called women. I despise these kinds of women and try to forget of their presence in our worlds but with people like Sarah Palin running around. . .it's hard to. :/ However, the lack of thought is rather disturbing when I meet other women. D:

- Well, thankfully the term "woman" isn't something we don't need to be deserving of. ;)
Rather than pushing the air heads, as you say, out of our minds, it's better to educate them, lead by example. My daughter will never see me dressed inappropriately (sexually suggestive, I mean), she will always see me work hard and well. She will always know that speaking one's mind is not only important but necessary. She will know the value of education and voting and reading and driving and general independence.
If I regard these other women as I do my child, that is to say, in need of teaching, the pain of seeing modern women act in a way that doesn't honor the feminists of yesterday becomes easier. :)
Sarah Palin scares me, too. And I'm way up here in Canada. - ReplySend message

- Kapongham
- Flag this comment
- Precisely - that's one reason I wrote my post - how do we crush this? I think people feel attacked and defensive around feminist ideas partly because people don't understand what male privelege is, and that it is something given by society. One guy said he only "got it" when someone pointed out that every time a man is described as feminine or woman-like, it's an insult - e.g. calling someone a "pussy", a "girl", having "no balls", etc. I guess we have to learn to recognize teachable moments, and take advantage of them without being pedantic... which is difficult.

- I heard it said once, "I'm a father of a daughter - how can I not be a feminist?" If only it were that easy. I know too many men and women who treat each other in ways that would never be acceptable as a parent. Alas.
I am also pretty vocal about the male/strong female/weak expressions! Can't stand them! The expressions are so ingrained, though. Even my husband, who is awesome and equal, has slipped with the, "gee, he/she really has cojones, huh?" Grrrr. Even worse are women themselves calling each other "bitch," or (horrifically) saying "my bitch" as a submissive term.
Teachable moments - yes, we must take every opportunity. Well said. - ReplySend message

- The protestors, aka Red Shirts, are protesting the current government, which was chosen during elections because they see the government as illegitimate. It sees the government as illegitimate because the elections were after a coup that overthrew an especially corrupt but populist prime minister, and disqualified many of his cronies. Therefore, none or very few of the people who supported the corrupt ex-premier were able to run in the elections after the coup.

- The baked brie was my appetizer. Main dish is some Thai food that might gross out your Western tastebuds, and was dutifully omitted. God is just (if he existed) because you get much better cheese selections where you live. :(

- I am mildly appeased by god's fore-smiting of the place you live in, but I'd really prefer he beamed me down some lava cake. Oooh, or a trifle, I could really go a trifle.
Hope he's writing this down. - ReplySend message

- When I eat dessert, let's say cake, I usually crave something really salty after, for example nachos.
Or vice versa.
It usually goes cake then nachos though. - ReplySend message

- There are just way too many factors that can affect a persons judgment for objectivism to make any sense. I see no way to perceive reality "objectively".

- For the weaker version of Objectivism, more than one description of reality is allowed, even though it is seen to exist outside of our senses. Is that more acceptable or not?
