  - I don''t watch it. But that's not the point. The point is the outrageously outsized important major college sports has attained and the damage it does to the actual purpose of colleges - to educate.

    - A major university with a well known sports program brings a lot to the table though. Better facilities, name recognition, and so on. With every good comes a necessary not so good. What damage are you speaking of?

      - In some schools the sports program has attained such a holy status that criminals get protected and crimes get covered up, as we saw at Penn State. The popularity of the programs because the end-all, be-all and it gradually corrodes the true purpose of the schools. Is it a good thing that the average American can name the quarterback or the coach of a college football team way before they can name a renowned professor doing breakthrough research to cure illness?

      - I speak of the damage done to the educational process when the sports program becomes bigger and more protected than the academic program and the school becomes dependent on the money it brings in or the outsized importance of sports. Setting aside the fact that most college sports programs lose money, these are colleges. They are not entertainment companies. They are there first and foremost to educate. When the sports programs become so important as to overshadow everything else, they become the dominant force. And from that, we have seen the corrupting influence it has had - from ridiculous coaches' salaries, to money diverted away from education to players who have no business being in college to other players who just get taken advantage of. It has gotten way out of control.

        This is the second part of my respone. somehow it got inverted.....so I repeat this here to follow the above comments.

        Accepting for the purpose of the moment that what I am doing is bitching, why shouldn't I throw this issue out for discussion here? It's a forum for public discussion of whatever is on people's minds. And this is on my mind.
        In addition, just to be clear, I love sports - pretty much any one, except maybe golf, which has no defense and is barely a sport. I just don't like the way the huge influence and importance they command in the educational system.

        I guess you are on the debate team, and write letters to your school paper. Maybe attend press conferences and voice your opinion loudly. Maybe go to games and berate the players for being such a pariah?

        And you based these assumptions on what? I have long since graduated, do not attend press conferences and do not go to games. I used to, until I stopped being taken for that ride. I would much rather play sports than sit on my ass and watch them when they are corrupting our educational system. As for voicing my opinion loudly, yeh...you got me on that one.

        You are spot-on correct. If people took stock of what major college sports are doing to the education system and boycotted them for a while, it might have an impact. The simple solution is for the big-time football and basketball programs to sever ties with the colleges and become minor leagues, pay the players and not put up this ruse about student athletics. Or they can ratchet down the attention paid to them at the colleges. Neither is likely to happen as long as they generate such fanatical devotion among fans who couldn't care less about the underbelly of the whole thing.

        It is not the players at fault most of the time. But they would suffer in their professional future (the 3%ers) by not having the televised exposure, which, be honest, is what drives the marked for all sports, all products, and we have a market that has it's wants. Who is the market? Who is to blame? Me, you, your neighbor, his kid...........

        It is almost never the players' fault. They are either using the system to get to the pros, getting used by the system and going nowhere or sometimes actually getting an education. But since when should colleges exist to given television exposure to athletes? Isn't that the role of private owners of sports franchises? How about we get major college sports out of the universities and set up basketball and football minor leagues, just like baseball or hockey minor leagues? The players would get paid, as they should,. The games could still be on tv, which fans could watch. Team owners would make money. Advertisers could still advertise. And the whole thing would no longer corrupt our educational system. That would solve the issue.
