- I think religion was the predecessor to science in a human attempt to understand the world. I think the disorder lies in the inability to let it go when something better comes along.

- I come closer to siding with Freud in The Future of an Illusion. He identified the religious impulse with wish fulfillment present in every human being, so certainly it has psychatric origins, but I wouldn't classify it as a disorder.

    - in my experience, most of religious people have religious parents or role models or surroundings, so this is a kind of world outlook that they inherit (you know, like it happens with political views, aesthetic preferences, bad/good habits). I think that in most cases this is not a kind of a conscious choice.

      - There is a marked difference tho in the fact that religions speak specific things, calling for specific things, so that more than just accepting what their parents say, they accept what the religion says.

        There's no marked difference. If you'd grown up with Muslim parents, you'd have a significant higher likelihood of being a Muslim. That's why religious groups concentrate in specific areas in clusters.

        You rely on likelihood. That's weak seeing as likelihood is frequently trumped by unlikelihood. Even if likelihood does come through for you it does absolutely nothing but state the observable. I can only shrug.

    - I often make the argument that religion is a bigger crutch for atheists than theists, an argument I make so often because it's so often prompted by atheists, evident in the massive amount of time they spend bashing religion, calling it disorder and the like, all towards the end of increasing that all important feeling of pride which isnt only the fuel for the sinner but is the very blood of sinners, limping along on that crutch as it were seeing that there positions are insufficient they lay their opinions on the backs of what they deem the more insufficient, theirs not being truth but being better than, weighing charges against the other for what their own scanty perceptions are unable to see. The mosssssssst magnificent part of it all is that it's alllllllllllll accounted for in the Bible. The sinner is outlined and as sure as its inerrant word the sinner follows right in line, so that so far from being a stumbling block to believers the sinner becomes the ultimate proof.

      - I love, love, love when lunatic religious people are so condescending because atheists are stupid for not seeing the truth. The bible is a book written by a bunch of men and has been changed and translated and books have been removed and SOMEHOW atheists are stupid because they won't just believe. My counter-argument, why can't you make an effort to see our side? We've all tried to see yours at one time or another. Religious people are so delusional and so die hard that it becomes impossible to think outside their church. Take your brain back! "god" gave you one for a reason.

        As far as how the Bible was written, it's kinda hard to say right? The best thing is not to judge it on the maybes of the construction but what was constructed itself, that being the Bible itself. It's pure harmony. There's no deeper well. You'll find countless prophesies fulfilled, and very specific prophesies. From beginning to end there's no weak link. Of course people have favorite verses to point to, but in all those cases they have no clue what they are talking about, them not being biblical scholars and all. And talk about a book that stands the test of time right? Psalm 33:11 tells us, "The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations." So the Lord's position is secure. People will forever believe for the same reasons, and likewise people will forever disbelief for the same reasons.

        I'm sorry, "The bible is great because it's the word of god and the proof is because the bible said so" is not good enough for me. That is a default answer by people who desperately believe and have no idea why, or are incapable of processing anything other than what they are told. Everyone is entitled to believe anything they want. The fact that I am not willing to bet my "soul" on god doesn't make me a bad person. I am simply calling you a pesudo-christian/muslim/mormon/whatever because of your judgement of sinners. You have no idea what makes a sinner, nor do any of the rest of you. So kindly stop spouting bible quotes as "proof" of anything. I can spout quotes from Alice in Wonderland and that still won't make the white rabbit real.

        That's definitely not the only story or collection of stories that 'stands the test of time', especially since a good fat portion of its stories are stolen from other texts that preceded it and that have survived just the same.

        I don't think it stands so high. I think it's an immoral piece of garbage that has some historical references explained from an ignorant and superstitious point of view. Like I said, its stories are borrowed or stolen. It's not original. It's a collection of stories already written by Pagans with some historical context from a superstitious viewpoint.

- The US polls have already said that Atheists are the most hated / least trusted group in the US. I think it will happen in this order, from most to least likely:
  
  1.) Woman
  2.) Gay person
  3.) Atheist
  
  Americans tend to equate Atheism with communism, sinful indulgent behaviour, lying, and immorality. They're at least *used* to the gay movement, the same way they're used to women asking for rights since the suffrage. I think though that gay person and Atheist are pretty close together in likelihood; a woman president will happen before that, which we're due for, since women have had rights longer than African-Americans have an we already have a black president.
